Pros

The people working there are all very smart and talented, willing to help others. Flexible working, remote wfh Projects are interesting Work-life balance is good

Cons

Compensation is not competitive, below market rate No transparency in the communication from leadership to rest of the staff Multiple layoffs (one before Christmas was terrible timing) Unclear priorities at times - sometimes projects that teams spent time on would just be scrapped. Other times, teams would have multiple "highest priorities", being pulled in all directions with expectations that everything needed to be delivered according to schedule. Executives did not really take accountability for the layoffs which happened apparently because of the market and recession. Please own up and take responsibility and do not blame everything on "things out of our control".

Thanks for the review. Some of this is factually incorrect re pay cuts / bonus but not really the place to go into it. We are always fully transparent with staff about where we are and whats happening but sometimes things change quickly and decisions need to be made. December was not ideal, I agree. I appreciate your comments and as always we will strive to improve

Pros

A good place to start your career, if you can learn to avoid office politics and focus on learning, and get out in a few years as head of some department at other companies.

Cons

I have been an employee at Soul Machines, a prominent company in Auckland, for a significant period of time, and I must admit that my experience here has been a mix of positive and negative aspects. While the company boasts cutting-edge technology and innovation, it suffers from a severe case of office politics and a worrisome level of censorship, spearheaded by a thin-skinned CEO. One of the most disappointing aspects of working at Soul Machines is the prevalent office politics. Rather than fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, there is a pervasive sense of competition and favoritism among colleagues. This not only hinders teamwork but also creates an unhealthy work culture. Professional growth and recognition are often determined by personal relationships and politics rather than merit, leading to frustration and demotivation among employees. Furthermore, the CEO's thin-skinned nature poses significant challenges. It is disheartening to witness a leader who cannot handle constructive criticism or open discussions. Company all hands meetings, which should be an opportunity for transparency and open dialogue, are heavily censored. This results in an environment where employees feel hesitant to voice their concerns or provide feedback that deviates from the predetermined narrative. By stifling honest communication, the CEO inadvertently creates an atmosphere of fear and self-censorship, hindering the company's progress and growth. Moreover, the CEO's efforts to censor negative feedback on Glassdoor are concerning. Glassdoor serves as an invaluable platform for employees to share their experiences and opinions. By suppressing adversarial feedback, the company fails to address valid concerns and denies potential employees the opportunity to make informed decisions about joining Soul Machines. It demonstrates a lack of transparency and a disregard for the genuine experiences of the employees. However, it is important to note that Soul Machines does have some positive aspects. The company's focus on cutting-edge technology and innovation is commendable. The work itself can be intellectually stimulating, and there are talented individuals within the organization who genuinely strive for excellence. Additionally, the company offers competitive compensation packages and certain employee benefits. In conclusion, Soul Machines has its strengths and weaknesses, but the presence of intense office politics and a thin-skinned CEO who censors company all hands meetings and Glassdoor reviews is a significant drawback. It is disheartening to witness a lack of transparency and an environment that discourages open communication. While the company's technological advancements are impressive, potential employees should carefully consider these issues before joining Soul Machines.
