Pros

Reasonably flexible, working from home is a bit frowned upon, and weren’t allowed to do it regularly, but great for having a fair amount of autonomy regarding appointments and a bit of freedom with start and finish times. Seemed understanding for those with kids. A significant portion of the people were great to work with, particularly those those in the lower tiers of the organisation.

Cons

The work culture was noticeably bad, even when I was a new hire. Witnessed many instances of people crying at work, and a certain portion of the managers were unable to appropriate manage their emotions. Very poor leadership (from CEO down) meant that the managers who were doing a good job were unfairly burdened with the work of those who weren’t. There was obvious cronyism, mostly in senior management and the board of trustees. In some cases this led to competency not seen in other parts of the company, but rarely. Remuneration was poor, and often there were large gaps in the range of staff working in the same job, despite comparable skill and competency. Managers would reprimand staff for discussing salary, and would incorrectly tell staff they were not allowed to discuss salaries (we had no confidentiality clause in our contracts). Due to the frequent restructures (formal and informal), people were being convinced to take positions without proper remuneration for increased workload, including managing staff, which lead to burnout and poor interpersonal relationships. I was genuinely concerned for the well-being of a number of staff, which the culture and workload were a contributor too - do a degree I’ve not seen in another workplace. The most dysfunctional office I’ve worked in, and I wouldn’t recommend working here to anyone.

Thanks for taking the time to make a review. We are disappointed that you feel this way, and do understand some of the frustrations you speak about. The fact the company has grown from 25 staff in 2020 to over 250 now, has meant at times there has been a disconnect between the New Zealand office and globally. This rapid growth has meant we have continually evolved and I do understand this is difficult for some people and that we can do a better job with this communication. The quarterly All Hands meetings are one step in this direction but I accept we can do better. I am sorry you do not recognize many of the great things happening at Oritain - the likes of Sir John Key becoming the Chair of Oritain, the Oritain Leadership Development Program, new office refurbishment, opening the Auckland office, the Oritain Engagement Forum, working with some of the leading brands in the world, attracting new investment to help grow local businesses etc. Once again we are sad that you feel this way and wish you all the best for you future endeavours. If you would like to reach out and discuss this with me personally please feel free to do so. All the best Grant Cochrane CEO

Pros

The actual team and people doing the work are amazing

Cons

No leadership in the country, terrible HR, not culture. Just focused on growth and profits at all cost. Funny considering they are meant to be improving sustainability and ethical supply chains! Really need to get some internal sustainability (inc social) policies together.

Hi there, Thanks for the feedback. I notice that you are a current employee so please feel free to call me and talk confidentially as I would like to understand this better. If you do not feel comfortable doing that then please reach out to your local Engagement Forum representative and they can bring this forward for you so we can find solutions. As a company that has grown so much in the last year or so we don't always have all the systems in place, that said we have invested heavily in People & Culture and are definitely making progress here. Thanks Grant Cochrane
