Autonomy. You had the ability to build whatever you needed to get the job done.
Cons
Feature Factory and seagull management. Business wanted a constant stream of new features with little regard for long term maintenance leading single engineers having to maintain multiple massive crumbling systems. They hired managers that came in, squawked about how everything is trash compared to their last faang job, made an even bigger mess with over complicated systems, then bounced for a bigger paycheck somewhere else leaving an unmaintainable mess behind.
