Pros

- good chance to grow into leadership positions if you like politics - you have a lot of spare time that you can use for personal development

Cons

- legacy code written by less qualified programmers - insurance business in NZ grows by acquisition, there are 100s of insurance related software products that require support and integration - everything moves very slow, you may get used to that and it will numb your brain - SCRUM is used as an excuse to keep too many developers busy with something

WFH good, managers petty

Pros

Can work from home. OT above 37.5h is 1.5x salary which is the only way I can survive on the low salary.

Cons

The level of pettiness at the company is extreme. Full of mid-level TLs who can be controlling, micro-managing to downright psychologically harmful- as any promotion is dealt with internally, if your TL doesn’t like you, it’s game over. They are trying to roll back WFH. Bonuses are a joke- a lure to get staff but never fully paid out. Bullying is rampant and hard to report- it’s honestly like Highschool. Decisions/ changes to processes/ systems constantly made at higher levels with literally no one aware how to use / implement. Our external suppliers are also confused a lot, so it’s just a bunch of poorly paid people, winging it.

Pros

Flexible work from home opportunities

Cons

If you are 30 seconds over your break, your name is highlighted in a daily report for all staff members to see. In that report is the amount of calls you take per day compared to other co workers, this is a bullying tactic which is sad to see. Dealing with tons of negative/angry customers too. also very outdated systems that operate like they are from the 80's and fail all the time. (amending a policy start date is a rewrite of the whole policy) applying for leave is extremely difficult and at their slightest inconvenience they will deny your leave.
