Workshop Engineer / Machinist

Active Engineering is a New Zealand-based industrial and general engineering company providing rapid-response mechanical repair, machining, and fabrication services across Auckland, nationwide, and parts of the Pacific. We are seeking a skilled Workshop Engineer / Machinist to join our heavy engineering team.
About the Role
This is a hands-on trade role focused on machining, repairing, and manufacturing precision components for industrial and heavy equipment. You will work in a fast-paced workshop environment and may also support field service breakdowns when required.
Key Responsibilities
Machining & Metal Work
- Operate manual lathes, milling machines, and CNC equipment
- Machine precision components such as shafts, bushings, pins, sleeves, and housings
- Perform turning, boring, drilling, grinding, and threading operations
- Work to tight tolerances for industrial repair work
Workshop Engineering
- Repair and rebuild heavy machinery components
- Fit and assemble mechanical parts including bearings, couplings, and hydraulic components
- Assist with fabrication and welding tasks when required
- Strip down and rebuild industrial equipment
Technical Interpretation
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
- Measure and verify dimensions using precision tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
- Ensure all components meet required tolerances and specifications
Field / On-Site Work (when required)
- Attend breakdown repairs on construction, mining, or transport equipment
- Carry out line boring, shaft repairs, and hydraulic servicing
- Work in outdoor and industrial environments
Quality & Safety
- Ensure all work meets engineering and safety standards
- Follow strict workshop safety procedures
- Conduct quality checks before final assembly or delivery
Requirements
- Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting & Machining, or Fitter Turner
- Experience with manual and/or CNC machining
- Strong mechanical and hydraulic systems knowledge
- Ability to read engineering drawings
- High precision measurement and attention to detail
- Physically fit for workshop and field-based work
- Welding and fabrication skills are an advantage
Work Environment
- Workshop-based industrial setting
