About the Role

The role of the Speciality Clinical Nurse for the MHAIDS ED team is based in the Wellington Emergency Department and provides rapid assessments for all people including current mental health service users, who present to the Emergency Department with a mental health problem. The primary function will be to triage assessment and formulate current needs and issues, develop a crisis response plan and where indicated provide immediate mental health intervention and /or facilitate access to MHAID services, or other relevant services in the community. The Speciality Clinical Nurse will determine those who need to be seen urgently, while being able to safely defer less urgent referrals to non-crisis parts of the mental health and addiction services or primary health services.

About the Team

The MHAIDS Emergency Department team is a dedicated, multidisciplinary group of mental health professionals who work collaboratively to provide timely, expert care to individuals presenting with acute mental health needs in the Emergency Department setting. Comprising a mix of advanced nursing roles, including Mātanga TapuhiNurse Practitioner Intern, Specialty Clinical Nurses, and other mental health clinicians, the team operates within a shared model of care that emphasises rapid assessment, culturally safe interventions, and integrated support for tāngata whaiora and their whānau.

About you

Essential qualifications, skills and qualifications:

• Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
• A current practising certificate.
• Completion of an undergraduate (leading to registration) or post graduate programme in mental health nursing.
• Three years mental health nursing experience, with demonstrated proficiency in mental health crisis assessment, formulation, planning and implementation of care.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in the nursing role.
• Master's in nursing or enrolment in same.
