Student Engineer Job Description

What is a Student Engineer?

Student engineers are current students in college engineering programs who are filling short-term, temporary roles through internships, co-ops, or similar programs designed to give them on-the-job work experience. They may perform roles in a variety of engineering specialties, such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. They perform a range of basic introductory engineering tasks and support services, such as drafting proposals and performing cost estimates. They may also “shadow” an established engineer who serves as their mentor. These internships often lead to offers of permanent full-time roles upon the student’s graduation.

Student engineers are typically a current student in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program, and must be in good academic standing. They should be familiar with the basic principles of their engineering specialty and have good project management skills.
